Grrreat! While WWIGO did a great job letting my N95 act as a webcam on Windows, now Movino does a super job streaming video from my N95 to my Powerbook… and even let Skype use it as a webcam!
Movino is a collection of applications for streaming and broadcasting live video from smartphones. The main applications are the following:
- A client for S60 smartphones
- A smartphone client for J2ME
- A gui application and a QuickTime component for OS X
- A video server for linux
- A drupal web front end
This has been developed during a project course at Ã…bo Akademi University. There’s currently no fixed plans for further development, but that doesn’t exclude the possibilty, if time permits and we find enough motivation.
The S60 client is used to record video and stream it to a receiving computer. It can encode data in a few different formats (raw YUV, abbreviated JPEG, MPEG for the video frames and AMR and μlaw for audio) and send them over Bluetooth or TCP/IP (over GPRS/EDGE/3G och WLAN). The lite version omits the MPEG encoder, reducing the size of the package.
The OS X gui application can be used to receive a movino stream (over Bluetooth or TCP/IP), preview it, record it to a local file, serve the content as a multiplexed ogg/theora stream over http. The application can also relay the content to the video server (e.g. for a setup where the computer has faster/cheaper network connections than the phone).
Installing and in action:
The camera and phone were being slowed down a lot with the above displayed settings… I changed them to JPEG compression and a smaller video size.
For using this with Skype on a Mac without built-in iSight, this is a great solution. Furthermore, the possibility to save a stream makes it an ideal tool for generating your own videocasts.
And the fact that it is open source… I applaud this! Guess that this will open up a few more doors and possibilities.

Hi, could u make a program to stream mp3 files to symbian s60 v3 devices, i have a nokia n80. the only current program is symsmb v2, but this only allows to save to memory and then play, it would be nice to have it stream direct from pc to phone on the fly, thanks.

Hi, thanks for info, i loaded all the programs for internet radio and shoutcast etc. nearly got it going but could not hear on another pc, due to ports being restricted by isp.
Anyhow i stumbled upon winamp remote for mobiles, which is run through orb, and that works fine, and i can stream files now,
thanks for the info, symsmb v2 is good for networking but doesnt as yet allow full streaming.

What i want to know is why u want to use 3rd party apps like Movino for Skype calls and stuff? isnt the built in iSight good enough? Is there any problem wid it? i’m new to the macworld, and am just switching frm Vista to Mac OS, so i dont really know much abt Macs, so it wud be nice if u cud tell me.
